Update: Merit Board Reinstates Officer from Brandon Johnson Excessive Force Case

Earlier today we wrote about the Merit Board clearing Officer Jerry Piland from charges of excessive force after hitting 15-year-old Brandon Johnson three times after he was already handcuffed on the ground.  We also mentioned that the ministers were vowing some kind of response.  They may want to pay attention to where the response should be sent.

IMPD Chief Paul Ciesielski had recommended Officer Jerry Piland be fired saying it was the worst beating he’d seen in 24 years as an officer.  Mayor Greg Ballard expressed frustration with the ruling vowing to continue reforms in IMPD to make sure this doesn’t happen again.  The Merit Board, on the other hand, went the other direction.

Who exactly is on the Merit Board?  Great question.  It sounds as though there are three that were appointed by former Mayor Bart Peterson, two appointed by FOP vote, one that has been on the Board since 1995 and only one appointed by Mayor Greg Ballard.
